The “Greening” of the Monthly Cycle –
Feminine Hygiene Innovation
Impacts the Environment and More…

Ontario, Canada, April 16, 2008 – With emphasis on global warming, toxic waste, and pollution, individuals are making informed decisions on how to contribute to a global solution. While not every woman can afford to purchase a hybrid car, women worldwide are choosing a modern, menstrual cup, The DivaCup, to create a positive ecofootprint each month. The reusable product is an alternative to the estimated disposable 12 billion sanitary pads and 7 billion tampons dropped into the U.S. environment (U.S. 1998) each year.

The DivaCup concept,
www.divacup.com, is on the leading edge of the U.S. $3.02 billion feminine hygiene market in (2004). The category is expected to climb to $3.15 billion in 2010. Because there have been very few innovations in the feminine hygiene category in the last 50 years, the product is a breakthrough for women.

After 10 years of promoting the 75 year old menstrual cup concept to the world market by selling another company’s rubber/latex version, they launched their own company, Diva International Inc. The mother-daughter team made patent-pending improvements and now manufactures their own product out of top grade silicone. The new material makes the cup comfortable, easy-to-use, clean, and reliable for everyday activities, swimming, diving, yoga and even extreme sports.

“With all the state-of-the-art conveniences Western society has developed, it baffles us why outdated feminine products are still being used. We believe that reusable menstrual cups are the next generation of feminine hygiene because they are the most environmentally responsible choice. They are also the most convenient and reliable option available and are not linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome,” explains Carinne Chambers.

Landfills are over-taxed with feminine hygiene products. In 2000, over 55.9 million women (in the U.S. alone) were monthly users of disposable feminine hygiene products that are “dumped” into the environment each year. Great resources of energy are used in the manufacture of these products. In addition, the additives and surfactants they contain pollute rivers, streams, and oceans.

Women are looking at these products as a way to ease the hassles associated with unreliable, uncomfortable tampons and pads and to make a responsible environmental choice – a choice that is as significant as switching from plastic to canvas bags.

The DivaCup is available nationwide at natural food stores like Whole Foods Markets; upscale grocery; and drugstores throughout the U.S., Canada, as well as in over 20 countries internationally.
