Your First Questions!

Q. Does The DivaCup leak?
A.
According to consumer research, 60% of women experience leakage every month when using tampons and pads! The DivaCup is reliable. The majority of women feel secure without the hassle of worrying about leakage.

If leaking occurs, the cup has not been inserted properly; it has not been rotated; it is not inserted at the right angle; or the muscle tone needs to be strengthened with kegel exercises (usually necessary after multiple vaginal childbirths).

Success with The DivaCup increases when the instructions are followed precisely. Sometimes it takes women one or two cycles to master insertion and removal. Most women find that once they find the right position, it is not necessary to use a backup pad or liner and that they would not be without it!

Many women can’t believe that it is possible for a feminine hygiene product to actually do its job and not “leak”. Believe it, ladies!!! This product actually works. Our testimonial pages are just a small sample of the many thousands of satisfied users worldwide who agree that The DivaCup is the best feminine hygiene product they have ever tried!

Q. Is The DivaCup messy?
A.
Almost every woman's initial reaction to The DivaCup is, "Ewww! That's gross!” When tampons were first introduced it took quite a while before the concept caught on. Once you take the time to learn about The DivaCup, and actually try it for yourself, you will be pleasantly surprised about how clean and NOT messy it really is.

The cup sits low in the vaginal canal and you can avoid reaching inside the vagina by pushing the cup out slightly. Simply bear down on the muscles for removal. Most women find that once they start using The DivaCup that every other method is messy and gross

Just imagine a product that actually lives up to its expectations: no leaking, no odor, convenient, comfortable, clean AND helps to save the planet! It's hard to believe that all this could be a reality, but try it for yourself and you will see that it is true.

Q. Is there odor with The DivaCup?
A.
No, there is no odor when using The DivaCup. Menstrual flow only begins to develop an odor when it begins to oxidize and break down from being exposed to air. Menstrual fluid on pads is exposed to air, so it does create an after odor. Tampons are not as bad since they are worn internally, but they can still create odor.

With The DivaCup, odor is not created because the flow is not exposed at all; consequently, it allows women to feel clean and secure. No more worrying about embarrassing odor or leakage!

Q. Can young girls and virgins use The DivaCup?
A.

Physically, The DivaCup is suitable for women of all ages as the vagina is made up of very flexible tissue and muscles. Women's bodies are designed this way to be able to stretch to deliver a baby. The tissue returns back to its normal size after expansion with intercourse or childbirth. It is the muscles that usually need to be strengthened after childbirth.

Many of our customers are as young as 11 or 12 years old. It is ideal for young girls who are very active (such as swimmers or gymnasts) who are looking for a more reliable method other than tampons or pads. For those concerned about the hymen, please consult your physician before use of any internal feminine hygiene protection. As for all other gynecological concerns, we suggest you consult your physician.

Everyone is unique and there are many variables. Many young women use The DivaCup. Please read and understand all of the FAQs. This will help you make an informed decision!

Q. Can you feel The DivaCup when you are wearing it?
A.
If you can “feel” the cup, it has not been inserted properly. Please see our inserting and removing FAQ. Because The DivaCup is made of soft silicone that actually softens with body heat, you cannot feel the cup at all. The DivaCup is totally different than the sensation of tampons. The DivaCup does not dry out the vagina, so it is extremely comfortable. You won’t even know it's there!

Q. Can The DivaCup be used for light and heavy flows?
A. The DivaCup works very well for women with light or heavy flows. The DivaCup holds one full ounce and the average women only flows about three to four ounces in her entire cycle. For most women, the cup is not even half full after 12 hours.

We always recommend you empty the cup, wash, rinse it, and reinsert it at least every 12 hours (2 times a day) even if your flow is light.

Women with heavy flows will simply need to empty the cup more often. The convenient ounces and milliliters measurement feature allows women to actually keep track of flow and accurately report flow details to their health professional.

Q. Can I sleep while wearing The DivaCup?
A. Yes! You will feel fresh, secure, and liberated. No worries about staying close to a bathroom. No restrictions on physical activity. You can wear The DivaCup for 12 hours at a time, so you have the convenience of not having to think about your period all night long!

Q. What do I do in a public restroom?
A.

Most women find that they do not have to remove The DivaCup more often than every 12 hours, and that taking it out in a public restroom does not occur very often. However, for women with heavier flows, or on the occasion you need to empty it in a public restroom, simply remove the cup, empty the contents and use a dry or damp tissue to clean the cup and reinsert. Make sure your hands are clean before going into the stall. Wash your DivaCup well with warm, soapy water at the next convenient time.

Q. Can you wear The DivaCup during intercourse?
A.

No, The DivaCup is bell-shaped and worn low near the vaginal opening. It should be removed before intercourse. The DivaCup is not a birth control device and should not be used for this purpose. The DivaCup is regulated by the FDA and Health Canada solely for use only as feminine hygiene protection.

Q. Can The DivaCup be worn with an IUD?
A.

The DivaCup is not suggested for use with an Intrauterine Device (IUD). It is possible for the IUD to become dislodged, displaced or removed when the menstrual cup is removed by inadvertently pulling on the IUD string. As with all gynecological concerns, please consult with your physician.

Q. Can you wear The DivaCup with the NuvaRing®?
A.

The DivaCup is worn low at the base of the vagina and is away from the cervix, it should not interfere with your Nuvaring®.

There is a possibility that the NuvaRing® can become dislodged while using any kind of internal feminine hygiene protection. Consequently, we recommend that you consult your physician before use of any kind of internal feminine hygiene product, including a menstrual cup.

Many of our customers use The DivaCup and the Nuvaring® simultaneously and have not reported any problems.

Q. I am unable to wear tampons, because they do not stay in once they are inserted. Will I have the same problem with The DivaCup or will it stay in place?
A. You will probably need to try the cup to see what happens. You may find that if the vaginal muscles are weak and do not hold The DivaCup in place that you may need to do Kegel exercises. Also, as with all gynecological concerns, please consult your physician – they will be able to determine this best.

Please note: The DivaCup sits below the cervix and not up against it, so it is important to aim it toward the tailbone not “up”. It is not inserted in the same way as a tampon.

Q. Can I use The DivaCup to collect fluids other than menstrual flow?
A. The FDA has approved use of menstrual cups only for menstrual feminine protection only. We do not suggest using it at any other time of the month.

Q. Do we really need measuring marks? Who measures their menstrual flow?
A.

Menstrual blood is measured for health reasons. Gynecologists, physicians, naturopaths and acupuncturists will ask about flow and change of menstrual flow to determine health and hormonal factors, fertility concerns, etc. A good site to refer to is www.endometriosis.org.

Disposable tampons and pads and even washable pads are not a reliable or scientific method of determining flow, because they come in many absorbencies, contain surfactants and moisture control agents.

How to Use The DivaCup

Q. How do I insert and remove The DivaCup?
A.
(This is a condensed version of the User Guide. Customers receive a full version with purchase of The DivaCup.)

On your first trial with The DivaCup, make sure you are relaxed and have time to read the User Guide thoroughly beforehand. Insertion and removal will only take a few seconds once you master the technique.

Wash your hands well with warm water and soap. Rinse. While sitting or standing in a comfortable position, insert your DivaCup according to the following instructions.

Step 1: Fold - Moisten the rim of The DivaCup with water if needed. Press the sides of the cup together and then fold it in half again.
Step 2: Hold - Hold the folded sides firmly between your thumb and forefinger. The single curved edge should be facing away from your palm.
Step 3: Insert - With the vaginal muscles relaxed, gently separate the labia with your free hand and then push the curved edge of the folded DivaCup into the vaginal opening.
Step 4: Removal - Wash your hands well with warm water and soap. Rinse. Pull gently on the stem until you can reach the base of the cup. Pinch the base of the cup to release the seal and continue to pull down to remove. The contents should not spill during removal. Simply empty the contents in the toilet, wash it well with warm, soapy water, and reinsert.

Please note: If The DivaCup is uncomfortable or leaking, then it is not positioned properly. In order to get the best results it is very important to insert it correctly.

Q. Do you have more folding suggestions?
A.

The 'U' Fold (also called the ‘C’ Fold):

Press the sides of the cup together and then fold it in half again.

The 'Push Down' Fold:

Holding the cup between your fingers, place your index finger on the rim of the cup. Punch down one side of the rim into the base of the cup to form a triangle. The opposite, remaining side will now appear as a small tip which is easy to insert.

Q. Are there any expanded insertion techniques?
A.

To ensure proper insertion, carefully read and follow the instructions. Make sure that you aim it horizontally towards your tailbone and that you are able to make one full rotation. Also, try running your finger around the cup pushing it against the opposite side of the vaginal wall. The stem may be trimmed for comfort.

You may want to use another method – the “push down” method: push one side of the cup into itself, then pinch the sides together.

The DivaCup sits lower than the cervix, so it is important to aim it toward the tailbone not “up”. Your cup could be positioned at an angle, so you may need to push the cup (toward your tailbone, not up) slightly further.

Please try this little tip: put the cup in about half way, turn the cup one full rotation and then push it the rest of the way in. Since it will open up before inserting fully, you will know that it is has fully opened and that you will create the seal for it to stay in place; therefore, the cup should not give you any discomfort.

With a bit of practice it will only take a few seconds to insert and
remove it correctly.

Q. How do I know when to empty The DivaCup?
A.

The DivaCup holds one ounce (30 ml). The entire average monthly flow is approximately 1 to 1.4 ounces (30-40 ml). By monitoring the fullness of the cup over a couple of periods, you will quickly learn how often to empty it according to your specific needs. Most women find that the cup is not even half full after 12 hours. For those with heavier flows, the cup is simply emptied more often.

The DivaCup is emptied, washed and reinserted 2-3 times per 24 hour day. It can be worn up to 12 hours at a time, but it must be emptied, washed and reinserted at least 2 times a day (twice in a 24 hour period). It can be worn up to 12 hours overnight. Most women need only to empty it in the morning and again in the evening.

It is not necessary to remove it for urination or bowel movements; however, The DivaCup must be removed prior to intercourse.

If you have a fairly regular cycle, you may insert The DivaCup right before your period to avoid spotting.

On the rare occasion you need to empty the cup in a public washroom, you can use a dry or damp tissue to clean the cup. Wash it well with warm, soapy water at the next convenient opportunity.

Q. Can The DivaCup become “stuck”? If it happens, what to do?
A. It is highly unlikely that The DivaCup will become “stuck”, because the vagina is only approximately 4 or 5 inches long! If The DivaCup moves up and becomes harder to reach, simply push down (or bear down) with your stomach muscles (similar to having a bowel movement). Reach inside the vagina and pull on the stem until you can reach the base of the cup. Squeeze the base.

Make sure that you are relaxed while doing this so that your vaginal muscles do not become tense. Once you have squeezed the base to release the air, pull the cup out at a sideways angle. This allows more air to enter the vagina, and it will then be able to be removed easily. If you still cannot reach The DivaCup, squat on the floor. This will automatically lower the cup because this position shortens the vagina.

The important thing to remember is not to panic as this will make the vaginal muscles very tense and can cause the cup to be harder to remove. If the stem feels “slippery”, wait a bit, relax, and try again by bearing down on the muscles. This will push the cup down to the lower part of the vagina, then you will be able to pinch the base and remove.

By following the instructions: rotating 360 degrees to make sure it has fully opened and creating the seal, and by wearing it low in the canal (not pushing it up high like a tampon), the cup should be
very easy to remove.

Q. What should I do if I cannot rotate the cup?
A. If you cannot rotate it, please try this little tip: put The DivaCup in about half way, turn the cup one full rotation and then push it the rest of the way in, always horizontally, toward the tailbone. Since it will open up before inserting fully, you will be aware that it has "eased" opened. By creating a seal, you are ensuring that The DivaCup is not going to move around, feel uncomfortable or leak.

Q. Is it possible to leave the cup in for long periods of time, such as over 24 hours?
A. The cup should be removed, emptied, rinsed or washed and then reinserted at least every 12 hours. Do not wear the cup for 24 hours without emptying.

In situations like traveling for an extensive period of time, it is possible to remove it, empty, simply wipe it, and then reinsert it. It can be thoroughly washed once it is convenient.

Q. Can I insert The DivaCup when I am not bleeding for a few hours to see how it feels?
A.
Your body is different during your menstrual cycle, so we do not suggest you try The DivaCup for a “practice run”. If you still would like to try it before your cycle begins, please use water to aid insertion.

The DivaCup is regulated as a medical device by the FDA and Health Canada only as a feminine hygiene menstrual device.

Q. Do you have to remove The DivaCup before using the bathroom?
A.
If inserted properly, The DivaCup will stay in place during urination or a bowel movement.

Q. What should I do if the stem irritates my vaginal opening?
A.

If the stem irritates the vaginal opening once it is positioned correctly, you may remove the cup and trim the stem slightly. Please use a sharp embroidery or fingernail scissor to round the hard edge to prevent further irritation.

Q. Can I use a water-based lubricant to insert The DivaCup?
A. Some lubricant ingredients can be damaging to the silicone, so we suggest using only water as a lubricant! Otherwise, the silicone may be compromised and may ruin the cup.

Guidance on Sizing

Q. Which model/size should I use?
A.
The DivaCup is available in two models:

Model 1: For women under 30 years old who have never delivered vaginally or by ceasarean section.

Model 2: For women over 30 years old and/or for women who have delivered vaginally or by c-section.

The Model 1 cup is 1 11/16" (~4.3 cm) in diameter and the Model 2 cup is 1 13/16" (~4.6 cm) in diameter. Both cups are approximately 2 1/4" (~5.7 cm) in length in the body of the cup, with another 3/8" (~1 cm) stem (2 5/8" total length). The stem may be trimmed to adjust for comfort.

There is a small difference between the two sizes (Model 1 is 1/8" (~0.3 cm) smaller), but it is important to use the recommended sizing to prevent leakage.

We recommend Model 2 if you are 30 or over 30 years old, because as we age, our hips naturally widen and the vaginal muscles lose elasticity. Because the vaginal muscles hold The DivaCup in place, it is important to use Model 2 if you are over 30, even if you have not had childbirth.

Q. I’m 29 but will turning 30 soon, should I buy Model 1 or Model 2?
A. Model 2 may be best for you. There is 1/8 inch difference between the two models (Model 1 is 1/8" (~0.3 cm) smaller), but it is important to use the recommended sizing to prevent leakage.

Q. Is the model number indicated on the cup itself?
A. The model number (1 or 2) is stamped on the inside rim of the cup.

Q. I am a very small framed woman, over 30, with no children. Should I still purchase the Model 2?
A.

Yes, you should still purchase the Model 2. The size of a women’s body does not affect the size of a vaginal canal. Many of our customers that are over 30, with no children are very small framed and use Model 2.

Physically, The DivaCup is suitable for women of all ages as the vagina is just made up of very flexible tissue and muscles. Women's bodies are designed this way to be able to stretch to deliver a baby. After being stretched after intercourse or childbirth the tissue returns back to its normal size.

There is only 1/8 inch difference in diameter between the two sizes.

Q. What about women under 30 years of age who have had a miscarriage but no childbirth?
A. For a miscarriage it depends on which trimester it occurred. It is best you consult your physician.

Note: there is only a 1/8 inch (~0.3 cm) difference between Model 1 and Model 2.

Cleaning and Care

Q. Is The DivaCup sanitary?
A.

Yes, when used as directed, The DivaCup is more sanitary than tampons or pads.

The DivaCup is made from top quality, healthcare grade silicone, which is 100% latex-free, plastic-free, BPA-free and odorless. It is non-absorbent and does not disrupt one’s natural vaginal environment.

The vagina is self-cleansing and continually producing fluid that “flushes” the vagina. Tampons (rayon and cotton) absorb this protective fluid and can disrupt the normal acidic vaginal environment.

Remember to wash and rinse your hands before inserting and removing your DivaCup. Wash your DivaCup well with The DivaWash or a low or balanced pH, unscented soap and warm water at least twice a day. The best cleaning agent to use is The DivaWash. We have formulated it to be pH balanced at 5.5, which is best for the cup and you, as it does not leave residue. Also, it should be boiled for 20 minutes at the end of each cycle. Please review the Cleaning and Caring category in the FAQs for boiling instructions.

Q. How do I clean The DivaCup?
A. The DivaCup should always be thoroughly cleaned. Washing the cup in mild soap and warm water provides sufficient cleansing. The best cleaning agent to use is The DivaWash. We have formulated it as a pH balanced wash that is best for the cup and you, because it does not leave residue. Remember to wash your hands before inserting and removing your DivaCup.

The DivaCup’s top quality, healthcare grade silicone can tolerate high temperatures. At the end of each cycle The DivaCup should be washed and rinsed as specified and then submerged in an open pan of boiling water (continuous rolling boil) for twenty (20) minutes. Do not leave the boiling pot unattended and use enough water so that the pan does not boil dry. Do not use vinegar, tea tree oil, scented soap, antibacterial soap, hydrogen peroxide, bleach or harsh chemicals as these may damage the silicone and ruin the cup.

We do not recommend cleaning The DivaCup in the dishwasher because chemicals, detergents and residue from previous dishwashing could harm the cup.

After use and proper cleaning, the cup must be placed in a storage that allows for air flow. The DivaCup comes with its own drawstring cotton pouch.

The four holes under the rim are of vital importance. They create the seal that secures the cup in place. If the holes or stem need extra cleaning, we suggest that you soak the cup in warm water for a few minutes then use a soft toothbrush (specifically designated only for the cup) for this. You can also use a toothpick (discarding after use). We do not suggest a pin as it may cause damage to the cup.

Q. How do I clean the holes under the rim? How important are they?
A.

Q. What is The DivaWash and where can I buy it?
A.

The DivaWash is a gentle, yet effective cleanser specially formulated for The DivaCup.  It does not contain any harsh chemicals and does not leave residue or fragrance.  Botanically enriched, The DivaWash leaves your Diva body clean, soft and never dry.  Use daily as a facial cleanser or as luxurious shower and bath gel.

The DivaWash is formulated as a concentrate which can reduce your eco-footprint!

Because we sell to distributors we don’t always know which stores carry which products. We suggest that you contact the stores listed on our Store Locator. You can also request that your local natural food, grocery and environmental  store or local pharmacy to carry The DivaCup and The DivaWash – they can order it for you!

If you would like to purchase The DivaWash online, you can purchase from www.drugstore.com.

The DivaWash contains the following ingredients:

water, [cocamidopropyl betain, decyl polyglucose, sodium cocoyl isethionate (coconut derived ingredients)], vegetable glycerin, caprylic/capric triglyceride, tocopherol acetate (vitamin E), ascorbic acid (vitamin C), retinyl palmitate (vitamin A), citrus officinalis (grapefruit seed extract - natural preservative and antimicrobial), xanthan gum, citric acid (pH balancer), citrus sinensis (sweet orange essential oil)

Q. Can I use vinegar, bleach or hydrogen peroxide to soak The DivaCup?
A. Please do not use vinegar, bleach or hydrogen peroxide as these will damage the silicone. Follow the instructions in the FAQ “How do I clean The DivaCup?”.

Q. What can I do if The DivaCup starts to discolor?
A.

Menstrual cups can sometimes discolor from the flow. If The DivaCup starts to discolor, it can be submerged in an open pan of boiling water (continuous rolling boil) for twenty (20) minutes. Do not leave the boiling pot unattended and use enough water so that the pan does not boil dry.

Q. I dropped my DivaCup in the toilet – can I still use it?
A.

Anytime The DivaCup is exposed to unsanitary conditions such as a toilet, please replace it with a new one.

Q. Why is The DivaWash sometimes opaque and sometimes clear?
A. The DivaWash is a naturally pH balanced, gentle wash! It is plant-based and all natural with no emulsifiers; consequently, sometimes some of the
ingredients will separate to the bottom. Please shake the bottle.

Q. How often can I boil The DivaCup?
A. At the end of each cycle The DivaCup should be washed and rinsed as specified and then submerged in an open pan of boiling water (continuous rolling boil) for twenty (20) minutes. Do not leave the boiling pot unattended and use enough water so that the pan does not boil dry.

Q. For how long should I boil my DivaCup?
A.

At the end of each cycle The DivaCup should be washed and rinsed and then submerged in an open pan of boiling water (continuous rolling boil) for twenty (20) minutes. Do not leave the boiling pot unattended and use enough water so that the pan does not boil dry. Also, washing your DivaCup with The DivaWash or a pH balanced, unscented soap and warm water is a great way to keep it clean on a regular basis.

Q. Why shouldn’t I store The DivaCup in a plastic “Ziploc” bag or other plastic container?
A. The DivaCup should not be stored in a plastic “Ziploc type” bag or other plastic container. It’s impossible for moisture to evaporate when using plastic storage. It’s best that The DivaCup be stored completely dry in a cotton bag to allow air flow. Bacteria thrives in moisture.

Q. I boiled my cup for too long and burnt it – should I buy a new one?
A.

You will need to replace the cup, because the silicone is compromised once the boiling water has evaporated. Please review our Cleaning and Caring category in the FAQs.

Sports and Traveling

Q. Will The DivaCup work for an active lifestyle?
A.

Yes! It's fantastic for swimming, aerobics, cycling, traveling, dancing, hiking, biking, running, camping, etc. It is perfect for extreme sports also. You will feel fresh, secure, and liberated. No feminine hygiene products to pack (or run out of). No worries about staying close to a bathroom. No restrictions on physical activity. Because you can wear The DivaCup longer than tampons or pads, you have the convenience of not having to think about your period all day long!

Q. Is The DivaCup convenient for traveling?
A.

Yes! The DivaCup is great for traveling. It weighs so little and there are no bulky supplies to pack or run out of. From business trips to family vacations to backpacking across the world, The DivaCup is all you need!

When washing in remote areas use potable water (see additional FAQs). The DivaCup really only needs to be washed well twice a day. If you need to remove it in a public place, just wipe it with tissue and replace. At the next convenient time, simply wash the cup with warm, soapy water. The most important thing to remember is to make sure your hands are clean before you insert or remove the cup.

Q. Can I use The DivaCup on an airplane?
A.

There should be no problem using The DivaCup on an airplane. For the best results please ensure your cup has been inserted properly.

The holes under the rim are important to secure the cup in place. If the holes need extra cleaning, we suggest that you soak the cup in warm water for a few minutes then use a soft toothbrush (specifically designated only for the cup) for this. You can also use a toothpick (discarding after use). We do not suggest a pin as it may cause damage to the cup.

Q. Can I use The DivaCup in developing countries? What about potable water?
A.
The most important thing is to use potable water. Using bottled water is good, but the quality of the bottled water does make a difference. Should the bottled water you use be less than clean (which can happen) it could cause a problem, so we ask you to be careful about the quality of the bottled water.

You must use potable water to clean The DivaCup to avoid infection. You must boil the water and clean The DivaCup, as well as the outside vulval area, with the cooled down, boiled water and a little mild soap (such as The DivaWash). Then rinse the cup again, and air dry. As always, please remember to wash your hands before this process and before using The DivaCup. When not in use, store your cup in a cotton bag (as provided). This will allow air flow.

Important Note: Do not store boiled water for long periods - undesirable organisms will eventually grow, especially in warm/hot environments; repeated access to the stored water will also introduce unwanted organisms.

Q. What are the “Leave No Trace” wilderness guidelines when using The DivaCup in the back country?
A.

Please use standard “cathole” practices. Also, observe the practice of containing the flow in a sealed plastic bag and hanging in a “bear bag” with other trash away from other animals.

Cathole: Catholes should be dug 6 to 8 inches deep at least 200 feet from water, camp, trails, and drainages. Bring a trowel to dig the hole, and disguise it well after use.*

Bear Bag: In bear country, hang “smellables” from tree limbs 12 feet off the ground, 6 feet from the tree’s trunk, and 6 feet below the supporting limb, or store it in specially designed bear-resistant canisters or on-site lockers.*

* Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics http://www.lnt.org/

Q. What would be the easiest cleaning method while camping?
A.

The DivaCup can be wiped out with tissue, washed and rinsed later. Please remember to wash your hands before inserting or removing The DivaCup.

Q. Is water that has been chemically sanitized for drinking OK for use to clean The DivaCup or does the water need to be boiled instead?
A. Treated drinking water could be fine, but that is dependent on the reliability of the treatment. We suggest reviewing our FAQ for cleaning the cup in developing countries.

Q. Could the flow reverse back into your body while performing very active sports or headstands?
A.

The DivaCup holds one ounce (30 ml). The entire average monthly flow is around 30 to 40 ml according to the Mayo Clinic.

Theoretically, the flow could slosh around inside the cup and reverse out of the cup slightly, but it cannot travel back through the small cervical opening from which the flow expels.

It's fantastic for swimming, outdoor enthusiasts, aerobics, cycling, traveling, camping, etc.

Materials, Lifespan and Regulations

Q. Does The DivaCup have to adhere to governmental regulations and standards?
A.

We are a holder of Medical Device Licenses with both the FDA and Health Canada. Under the regulations, and because it is a personal hygiene product, it is suggested that menstrual cups should be replaced once a year. The silicone used in The DivaCup – which is 100% plastic-free, BPA-free, latex-free and odorless – is the same material and grade approved for healthcare applications.

Diva International Inc. is ISO 13485 certified to meet the new medical device requirements of Health Canada as of January 1st, 2003. This certification ensures that The DivaCup is manufactured, packaged, and sold following specific procedures that assure the highest quality, safety and effectiveness of the product.

ISO 13485 is a Quality Standard governed by the International Organization of Standardization in Geneva, Switzerland, and is recognized and practiced in over 160 countries around the world. ISO 13485 is the quality standard for medical devices. It has been designed to ensure that companies follow strict guidelines to ensure the highest quality of their products, as well as meeting applicable government requirements.

Q. Is the silicone material that The DivaCup is made from safe? Is it the same silicone used in breast implants?
A.

Some women are concerned that silicone is dangerous because of its association with breast implants. There is a major difference between the silicone in breast implants and the silicone used in The DivaCup. The older breast implants that caused problems were made from a sac filled with silicone gel, a different material to what we use for The DivaCup. In the past, problems occurred when the sacs ruptured or improperly sealed valves allowed the silicone gel to leak into the
body.

The DivaCup is made of a high quality, soft healthcare grade silicone that starts as a liquid. Then the molecules are bound together (or vulcanized) with very high heat to form a solid stable piece of silicone (similar to the feel of soft rubber). The DivaCup is cured after production in an oven at a very high temperature to make sure all the molecules are bound and “chain linked” together.  Since the end product is a solid material yet flexible and durable, there is no possibility for anything to leak into the body (no leaching).

This form of silicone is odorless, has antibacterial properties, is latex-free, plastic-free and BPA-free. It has been used safely in healthcare applications for over 50 years. Our silicone is approved for use in The DivaCup as feminine hygiene protection by the FDA and Health Canada.

The FDA has cleared The DivaCup for use by the FDA for use as feminine hygiene protection. It also holds a current Health Canada medical device license.

More about silicone:

The three most common elements found on earth: hydrogen, carbon and silicon are combined to create silicone. Silicon is the second most abundant element in the earth's crust and found in sand, quartz and rocks.

Silicone products have been shown to be biocompatible (i.e. accepted by the human body without adverse reaction), durable, flexible, and easy to sterilize. Silicone materials have been extensively tested in laboratory studies, as well as clinical studies that study human health.
Silicone comes in oil, liquid, gel and solid forms. Solid silicone differs from the silicone gel used in breast implants. The DivaCup is made from top quality, healthcare grade silicone in the solid form where the molecules are chain-linked and bound together. Solid healthcare grade silicone does not leach into the body and has been used for over 50 years for medical procedures.

Because silicone is manufactured in various forms, it appears in a wide variety of products that most of us use every day. Hairsprays, medicines, cosmetics, suntan lotions and moisturizing creams are just some of the consumer products that contain a form of silicone.

Q. What is the lifespan of The DivaCup? When should I replace The DivaCup?
A. Due to government standards and the personal, hygienic nature of the product, we recommend a menstrual cup should be replaced once a year.  Ultimately, it is still up to the consumer to decide when she feels it is necessary to replace the cup.

Q. Does The DivaCup contain phthalates?
A.

The DivaCup is made from top quality silicone – the same material used in healthcare applications for over 50 years.

Silicone is phthalate-free, latex-free, plastic-free and BPA-free!

Q. Does The DivaCup contain Bisphenol A (BPA)?
A. The silicone in The DivaCup does not contain Bisphenol A (BPA). The DivaCup is made from top quality, healthcare grade silicone.

Q. Does your company test your products on animals? Are there any animal derived ingredients in The DivaCup or The DivaWash?
A. We do no animal testing nor use animal products in relation to The DivaCup. No other materials/ingredients are used in the production of The DivaCup.

The DivaWash is pH balanced at 5.5. This versatile wash is botanically-based - no animal products or testing!

Q. Is there any concern about boiling The DivaCup?
A. There is nothing released in boiling The DivaCup. We use top quality silicone, which is 100% latex-free, plastic-free, BPA-free and odorless.

The material has gone through substantial testing to make sure none of the molecules will break away from the product. Since the end product is a solid rubber-like material, there is no possible way for anything to leak into the body (no leaching).

Q. Are there any acrylates in The DivaCup, or any acrylates used in any stage of its production?
A.

There are no acrylics or acrylates in the silicone or in the manufacturing process of The DivaCup!

Q. Why don’t you offer The DivaCup in colors instead of clear?
A.

We took a hard look at offering The DivaCup in colored silicone but decided against it.

Brightly colored silicone is fun but artificial, chemical-based dyes are used to create it. We chose the clear silicone cup because the skin, including the sensitive skin of the vaginal walls, should not be exposed to dyes, chemicals, etc.

The DivaCup is made from only top quality silicone, a material used in healthcare applications for over 50 years.

Medical Related Questions

Q. It seems that my period is shorter in duration since using The DivaCup. Is this possible?
A. There are no medical findings concerning the length of one’s period when using a menstrual cup. The menstrual cup is simply a device, an apparatus, that sits low in the vagina to hold the flow. Because it is comfortable and convenient, many women find that they do not think of their period in the same way; consequently, it may seem that the duration of their period is shorter.

Q. Are you aware of any cervical problems caused by a cup being suctioned onto the cervix?
A.
The DivaCup does not “suction” onto the cervix.

The DivaCup is worn low at the lower part of the vaginal canal. It is not worn near to the cervix.

Q. Will using The DivaCup affect the tightness of my vagina and/or stretch it out at all?
A.

Physically, The DivaCup is suitable for women of all ages as the vagina is made up of very flexible tissue and muscles. Women's bodies are designed this way to be able to deliver a baby. After being expanded, after intercourse or childbirth, the tissue returns back to its normal size.

Q. I am having vaginal rejuvenation surgery. Should I switch from Model 2 to Model 1?
A. There is no way to determine which model will fit you best because of the nature of surgery. It may be best to consult your surgeon. Also, it may be best to try both Models, 2 and 1, once you are able to tolerate insertion.

Q. I pass large clots during some days of my period – can I use The DivaCup?
A. You would handle this as you would heavy flow – the cup would be emptied more often than every 12 hours. A bit of trial and error may be in order, but one quickly learns how often to empty the cup to meet their specific needs.

Q. Can a menstrual cup exacerbate hemorrhoids?
A. A menstrual cup sits low in the vagina, and when inserted properly, is comfortable and cannot be felt. Everyone is unique, and the best way to troubleshoot concerns is to consult with a physician. He/she will be best to determine the presence of swollen or inflamed rectal blood vessels and if a menstrual cup would exacerbate the condition.

Q. Can the cervix get irritated by having the cup next to it for several days in a row?
A. The DivaCup sits approximately two inches below the cervix; consequently it doesn’t touch the cervix nor is menstrual fluid held near to the cervix.

Q. What about Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)?
A.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is considered a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by toxin-producing strains of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium. TSS has been linked to high absorbency and prolonged use of tampons. There are now regulations in labeling for tampon absorbency to decrease the risk of TSS.

Symptoms of TSS often mimic the flu and can include sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, or a rash that looks like a sunburn during your period or a few days after.

If you have had TSS, do not use a menstrual cup. As with any gynecological concern, please consult your physician.

Q. Why does your User Guide say that if I’ve had Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) I shouldn’t use The DivaCup?
A.

An increased risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is not associated with the use of menstrual cups. We mention TSS in our literature so that women will be aware of this serious condition.

We suggest that you consult with your physician concerning TSS and the use of a menstrual cup.

Q. What is endometriosis and is there a connection to menstrual cups?
A. There is no connection to endometriosis and use of a menstrual cup.

Endometriosis is a painful, chronic disease that affects 5 1/2 million women and girls in the USA and Canada, and millions more worldwide. It is a condition in which endometrium, the tissue which normally lines the uterus, grows in locations outside the uterus. This misplaced tissue develops into growths or lesions which respond to the menstrual cycle in the same way as the tissue of the uterine lining: each month the tissue builds up, breaks down, and sheds.

During a normal menstrual cycle, the blood flows from the uterus, through the cervix and out of the body through the vaginal opening, whereas the blood and tissue shed from endometrial growths has no way of leaving the body. This results in internal bleeding, breakdown of the blood and tissue from the lesions, and inflammation -- and can cause pain, infertility, scar tissue formation, adhesions, and bowel problems.

Q. Can it be worn for women with a tipped or tilted uterus?
A.

Yes, The DivaCup can be worn for women with a tipped or tilted uterus. Since it is worn lower in the vaginal canal it does not interfere with the position of the uterus. Of course, as with all gynecological concerns, please check with your physician first.

Q. Can menstrual cups cause retrograde menstruation?
A.

The DivaCup is worn low in the vaginal canal collecting the flow far away from the cervix. The DivaCup does not cause retrograde menstruation. Remember that retrograde menstruation does not even refer to the flow going upwards from the vagina into the cervix, but actually from the uterus into the fallopian tubes. In this case, the actual form of feminine protection used has no impact on retrograde menstruation. As we mentioned earlier, this happens in the majority of women.

We have had many customers over the years that suffer from severe endometriosis (including some doctors) who have reported amazing success with The DivaCup and even some relief. Since endometriosis causes heavy bleeding, our customers report that The DivaCup is able to support their very heavy flows with minimal to no leakage.

Please consult with your physician concerning any gynecological concerns.

Q. Can women with weakened pelvic floor muscles or a prolapsed uterus use The DivaCup?
A. We suggest you check with your physician by bringing The DivaCup into your exam. He/she will best be able to advise you. The fit in these situations varies greatly from woman to woman and expert advice in a gynecological exam is best.

Q. Can The DivaCup be used for lochia flow during postnatal bleeding?
A. Use of The DivaCup during postnatal bleeding may cause inflammation. The DivaCup is regulated by the FDA and Health Canada solely for use only as feminine hygiene protection. We suggest you contact your healthcare physician before use after childbirth.

Q. How soon after childbirth can I use The DivaCup?
A. We suggest you consult your physician before using The DivaCup after childbirth.

Q. Is there any information on connections between the cup and yeast infections?
A.

There is no increased risk of yeast infections with the use of menstrual cups if they are cleaned properly. Please see cleaning and boiling instructions in our FAQs.

Q. Has The DivaCup ever been associated with any bacterial infections like vaginitis?
A.

The DivaCup has been cleared for marketing by the FDA and Health Canada. Menstrual cups have undergone rigorous reviews for over 30 years. These government bodies determine safety and efficiency.

There is no evidence that menstrual cups increase the risk of yeast or bacterial infections, but we do suggest using The DivaWash (or a pH balanced soap), because it does not leave a residue. Soap residue can cause irritations. As for all gynecological concerns, we suggest you consult your physician.

Q. Can The DivaCup be used to catch vaginal discharge throughout the month?
A. The DivaCup is regulated as a medical device by the FDA and Health Canada only as a feminine hygiene menstrual device. Consequently, we do not advise its use for anything other than for menstrual protection.

As for all gynecological concerns, we suggest you consult your physician.

Q. Is there an increased risk of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) when using The DivaCup?
A. Menstrual cups are not associated with an increased risk of UTI.

You may need to trim the stem a bit so that it is not protruding near to the urethra. Also, it is important to wash and rinse the cup and the stem thoroughly.  It is best to use a mild pH balanced wash like The DivaWash, so that residue is not left on the cup. Residue may cause irritations.

As for all gynecological concerns, we suggest you consult your physician.

Q. Can The DivaCup be used as a form of birth control or to prevent Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)?
A.

Menstrual cups are regulated by the FDA and Health Canada for use only as feminine hygiene protection. They are not to be used as a birth control device and do not protect from Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

The DivaCup must be removed prior to intercourse.

Q. I am allergic to latex rubber. Will I be allergic to The DivaCup?
A. Synthetic latex rubber and natural latex or gum rubber contain a protein called "nitrosomine". This is the chemical that produces the allergic reaction that many people have to latex. The DivaCup is made from durable top quality, healthcare grade silicone that is suitable for use by women with latex allergies, because it is nitrosomine- and latex-free.

Q. Will I have an allergic reaction to The DivaCup?
A.

One could have a sensitivity to any substance, but it is extremely rare to have a sensitivity to silicone. Studies indicate that silicone is biocompatible with the body. This is why silicone has been used in healthcare applications for over 50 years.

If you experience a skin sensitivity, we suggest that you not wear the cup for a full  24 hours – especially on light days. It may be best to “take a break” for this period of time.

Should you have any concerns, we suggest that you check with your physician or dermatologist.

Q. Is The DivaCup and its packaging free of gluten, tree nuts and peanuts? I’m allergic to these.
A. The packaging comes from a variety of sources, and we cannot guarantee that the packaging is free of gluten, tree nuts or peanuts; however, The DivaCup itself does not contain any of these ingredients.

Please note: the cup can be submerged in an open pan of boiling water (continuous rolling boil) for twenty (20) minutes before use. Do not leave the boiling pot unattended and use enough water so that the pan does not boil dry.

Should you have any concerns about allergies, please consult your physician.

Q. Can I use The DivaCup while using vaginally-administered medication to clear up an infection?
A.

No, it is best to discontinue use until the infection has cleared up completely. Because we are not medically staffed, we do not know if yeast (Candida albicans) can be killed with boiling. Consequently, we suggest replacing the cup with a new one once the infection is completely clear.

Also, never use the cup at the same time topical medication is being used. The medication may compromise the silicone and ruin the cup. If this has happened, please replace the cup with a new one.

There is no increased risk of yeast infections with the use of menstrual cups if they are cleaned properly. Please review the Cleaning and Caring category in the FAQs.

For further questions concerning vaginal infections, please contact a physician or healthcare provider.

Q. Is there is any connection between The DivaCup and Cervicitis?
A. To our knowledge menstrual cups have not been associated with increased risk of Cervicitis. As with all gynecological concerns, please consult your physician.

Purchase, Marketing and Charity

Q. If it’s so good why haven’t I heard of it?
A. The original menstrual cup was available in the early 1930's, but was quickly overshadowed by the popularity of disposable products. Currently, The DivaCup is very popular, because women are ecologically conscious. (disposables cause much damage to the environment).) Diva International Inc. is dedicated to educating women about The DivaCup through advertising, publicity, events, and web TV. Knowledge of The DivaCup is also being propelled through word of mouth and thousands of bloggers who are satisfied DivaCup customers!

Q. What is the difference between The DivaCup and other menstrual cups?
A.

The DivaCup is made from soft, healthcare grade silicone that is 100% hypo-allergenic. Some other menstrual cups are made from natural latex rubber (gum rubber), which contains a protein called nitrosomine. Women who have allergies or sensitivities to any form of latex should not use menstrual cups which are made from latex rubber.

The DivaCup also features extra grip ridges for easier removal. The stem of The DivaCup is shorter than other cups to allow for added comfort and a more secure fit with less leakage. Other patent-pending features make The DivaCup reliable, comfortable and easy-to-use.

The DivaCup is regulated by the FDA and is the only menstrual cup that holds a valid Health Canada license.

The DivaCup’s patent-pending design has been expertly engineered within the framework of FDA and Health Canada guidelines and is the only menstrual cup that is ISO certified.

The DivaCup is designed to be worn lower than other menstrual cups. Therefore, the stem has been designed shorter and the rounded edge on the stem is designed for more comfort. We use the highest quality silicone (there are many grades) to assure comfort and durability. It is a reliable alternative to pads and tampons.

Q. Isn't The DivaCup too expensive?
A.

At first glance it may seem that The DivaCup is expensive compared to buying a box of tampons or pads.  However, every DivaCup user will attest that it is worth every penny. The best part is that The DivaCup pays for itself in just a few months since it is a reusable product. You no longer have to purchase endless menstrual products.  Switching to The DivaCup is a small investment (the cost of a moderately priced blouse or a dinner out) and yet it can save approximately $100.00-150.00 U.S. a year.

Q. Where can I purchase The DivaCup and how much does it cost?
A.

Please ask your local natural food, environmental, or drugstores to carry The DivaCup and give them our sales contact information. www.divacup.com and 866-444-DIVA (3482).

Because all menstrual cups are regulated by the U.S. FDA, Health Canada and regulatory bodies in respective countries, we must adhere to specific regulations and standards in every aspect of our marketing and sales. Consequently, we cannot allow consumers to sell to other consumers, or create/use advertising or promotional materials of any type. You may contact us directly for any specific needs you may have!

Q. Are there free samples available?
A. The DivaCup is more expensive to produce than disposables; consequently, we do not offer samples. The DivaCup is made from top quality silicone, a much more expensive material and manufacturing process. Please note: Disposable tampons and pads are made of fiber (cotton, rayon, cotton/rayon).

The DivaCup easily pays for itself within just a few cycles.

Q. Do you offer a coupon for The DivaCup?
A.

We do not have coupons per se, but our retailers and www.drugstore.com often run specials.

Reminder: the Suggested Retail Price is $32.50-40.00 U.S. This reflects a savings of $100-150 U.S. a year when compared to purchasing disposables. Additionally, The DivaCup is the most environmentally responsible feminine hygiene choice because it is reusable!

Q. Where should I purchase The DivaCup?
A.

Because of the amount of energy and resources expended to send an individual order, we encourage consumers to make an effort to order from a local retailer. This is the most environmentally-friendly method of purchasing The DivaCup. Also, other women who see it on the store shelf, become curious, and they investigate this revolutionary, modern alternative.

Our goal is to make The DivaCup visible to as many women as possible and to support our retailers and e-tailers. These stores share the vision for The DivaCup concept – both from an environmental and health point of view, so we greatly appreciate their understanding of the importance of the concept. .

We market The DivaCup as a way for women to lessen their own “eco-footprint” and we, as a company, are doing this also by encouraging purchase through a local retailer or any of our e-tailers.

Please see a list of retailers/e-tailers and their locations on our Store Locator. For international vendors click here.

We do not offer returns or refunds. We require the cup be returned in the seldom case of manufacturer defect. Please contact info@divacup.com.

Q. How can I be assured that I am not purchasing a DivaCup from old stock?
A. If you choose to purchase from a local store or one of our authorized e-tailers, you can be assured to have a cup that was manufactured recently.

Because The DivaCup is extremely popular, we know of no one in the world that has “back stock”.

Q. Is there a "new design" or "2008 model" of The DivaCup?
A. Retailers or e-tailers that indicate that there is a "new design" or "2008 model" have inaccurate information. There is no 2008 model nor new design.

Q. Does The DivaCup donate to charity?
A. We receive requests for donated cups every day. All of the stories and needs are heart wrenching. We realize that we cannot determine which organizations, situations and groups are the most needy!

Consequently, we have decided to make an annual donation to Vitamin Angels’ 20/20 program that addresses the problem of blindness in children in developing countries because of lack of Vitamin A.  We believe that this program helps children, as well as their mothers and fathers.  Please visit their site.  We believe you’ll be quite impressed.

www.vitaminangels.org

We are so inspired by the work the Vitamin Angels accomplishes worldwide.

Pads and tampons create an additional problem in developing countries. These countries do not have an infrastructure for disposable feminine hygiene products.
